East Coast

Region of North Island, New Zealand, extending from East Cape to the southern boundary of Gisborne District; population (1996) 48,100. It is bordered inland by the Raukumara and Huiarau ranges, which form the northernmost extensions of New Zealand's main axial mountain ranges. Products include fruit and vegetables, and the main exports are fish, wool, meat, and dairy produce. Most of the population live in the city of Gisborne.
