Eastern Cherokee Indian Reservation

American Indian reservation in west North Carolina; area 210 sq km/81 sq mi; population (1990 est) 6,500, of which 83% are American Indian. It is situated on the southeast edge of the Great Smoky Mountains Park. The reservation is home to the Eastern Band of Cherokees, who retired into the area when most of the Cherokee nation were forced westward on the Trail of Tears in 1838. Arts and crafts and the historical drama Unto These Hills, presented outdoors during the summer, draw visitors.
