Easthampton

Town in Hampshire County, west-central Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 15,600. It is located 19 km/12 mi northwest of Springfield, on the Manhan River Mountain. Tom lies immediately to the east, between Easthampton and the Connecticut River. Originally an agrarian community, and incorporated in 1785, the town became industrialized and was famous for its button, elastics, and rubber goods industries. Many of the traditional industries have now closed down, and Easthampton has become a suburb of Springfield, with some light manufacturing.

The town is home to the Williston Northampton prep school. The Massachusetts Audubon Society manages the Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary.
