Eastland, James Oliver (1904-1986)

US senator. He was elected as a Democrat for Mississippi (1943-78). A fervid anti-communist, he attacked alleged subversives in the Civil Rights movement, education, and the arts. As chairman of the Judiciary Committee, he opposed Civil Rights legislation.

He was born in Doddsville, Mississippi and was a wealthy cotton planter before going into politics. He served as chairman of the Internal Security Subcommittee.
