Eastland Company

Company founded 1579 to challenge the Hanseatic League's control of trade with the Baltic. An amalgamation of several smaller English associations, it imported grain and naval supplies, especially timber for masts, in return for woollen products, and succeeding in breaking the Hanseatic League's dominance of the trade. See also Muscovy Company.
