Eastleigh

Town in Hampshire, England, 8 km/5 mi north of Southampton; population (2001) 24,100. The Ford Motor Company has a large commercial-vehicle plant on the Eastleigh–Southampton boundary. Other industries include cable manufacture, light engineering, and the production of pharmaceuticals and confectionery. On the outskirts of the town lies Southampton (Eastleigh) Airport, which has regular services to the Channel Islands.

Eastleigh developed around the London–Southampton railway line in the 19th century, growing into the principal carriage and locomotive works of the Southern Railway. With the shrinkage of the rail network in the late 20th century, railway-related work decreased.

The first flight of the World War II fighter plane Supermarine Spitfire took place at Eastleigh aerodrome in 1936.
