Eastman, Joseph Bartlett (1882-1944)

US social reformer and public official. The ‘watchdog’ secretary of Boston's Public Franchise League, he investigated municipal utilities. While serving on the US Interstate Commerce Commission, he earned respect for his fair-mindedness, but often lost his fights to regulate railroad rates.

He was born in Katonah, New York. He served as an independent member and twice as chairman of the US Interstate Commerce Commission and he coordinated rail traffic as director of Defense Transportation.
