Eastman School of Music

US conservatory, in Rochester, New York, founded in 1912 and taken over in 1917 by George Eastman (1854–1932). It became part of the University of Rochester in 1921, with Howard Hanson as director 1924–64; he was succeeded by Walter Hendl, 1964–72, and Robert S Freeman from 1972. The Cleveland Quartet has been its quartet-in-residence.
