Town in Macomb County, southeast Michigan; population (1990) 35,300. It is located 16 km/10 mi northeast of the city of Detroit. The settlement originated in 1827 on the military road between Fort Gratiot (now Port Huron) and Fort Wayne (now Detroit). Lying exactly between Mount Clemens and Detroit, it was called Halfway Village, but was renamed East Detroit in 1929; it was subsequently renamed Eastpointe in 1991. A largely residential suburb of Detroit, it also manufactures such products as marine and auto parts, structural steel, and tools.
