Eastport

Town in Washington County, Maine; population (1990) 2,000. It is the easternmost town in the USA. It is located on Moose Island, in Passamaquoddy Bay; Cobscook Bay lies to the west, Lubec to the south, and Campobello Island to the southeast. The main industries are fishing, sardine canning, and the manufacture of fishmeal and pearl essence (made from scales). The city also attracts a number of artists.

Eastport prospered from smuggling after the 1807 Embargo Act, and was held by the British from 1814–18. Boundary disputes continued until 1842. Fort Sullivan (1808) and the Old Sow, one of the world's largest whirlpools, are located here. Tides average 6 m/18 ft, and have been known to reach 12 m/40 ft.
