Eaton, Daniel Cady

Eaton, Daniel Cady (1835–1895)

US botanist. After serving with the army during the Civil War, he became a professor of botany at Yale. He wrote botanical definitions for Webster's International Dictionary, and authored the classic The Ferns of North America (1877–80).

He was born in Fort Gratiot, Michigan and was influenced by his grandfather, the botanist and educator Amos Eaton. A specialist in ferns, and later in mosses, he carried out a great deal of field work.
