Ebert, Carl (1887–1980)

German opera producer and manager. He produced Le nozze di Figaro in Darmstadt in 1927, and worked in Berlin before leaving with Fritz Busch in 1933; with Busch he founded the Glyndebourne Festival in 1934. He was artistic director there until 1939, and again from 1947 to 1959, and helped to create new standards in the performance of Mozart's operas. He staged the first performance of The Rake's Progress (Venice, 1951) and worked again at the Berlin Städtische Oper from 1954 to 1961. His son Peter (born in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1918) worked at Glyndebourne and Los Angeles, and in West Germany. He was director of productions at the Scottish Opera 1965–75, and general administrator 1977–80.
