Ecclefechan

Village in Dumfries and Galloway unitary authority, Scotland, 8 km/5 mi north of Annan; population (2001) 750. The essayist and social historian Thomas Carlyle was born and buried in the town.

He tramped on foot the ninety miles from Ecclefechan to Edinburgh University, and remained there for four years; but among the subjects of study he cared only for mathematics, and he left at the age of seventeen without receiving a degree.
The little village of Ecclefechan was about six miles from the Solway Firth, among the pasture lands of the bale of Annan.
