Echternach

Echternach

Town in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, situated on the River Sauer, 32 km/20 mi northeast of the city of Luxembourg; population (1991) 4,200. It is a tourist centre and was largely rebuilt after World War II.

Echternach developed around an abbey founded in 698 by a missionary monk from Yorkshire, England, called St Willibrord, who is buried there. A traditional procession, originating in the 8th century, is held annually on Whit Tuesday (part of the Christian festival of Pentecost).
