division of labour

System of work where a task is split into several parts and done by different workers. For example, on a car assembly line, one worker will fit doors, another will make the engine block, and another will work in the paint shop. The division of labour is an example of specialization.

Division of labour also exists in traditional societies where men and women perform gender-related tasks (a sexual division of labour).
