Ecorse

Town in Wayne County, southeast Michigan; population (1990) 12,200. It is situated on the Detroit River, 11 km/7 mi southwest of Detroit. Growth of the town was stimulated by the development of the Ford complex in Dearborn, 8 km/5 mi to the northwest. A steel plant was built in 1930; other manufactures include chemicals, auto parts, and tools.

The site of the town was originally an American Indian camp and burial ground. Founded in 1812, it is named for the Rivière aux Écorces (‘tree-bark river’), a small stream bordered by trees from which American Indians made canoes.
