Equator

Great circle whose plane is perpendicular to the Earth's axis (the line joining the poles). Its length is 40,092 km/24,902 mi, divided into 360 degrees of longitude. The Equator encircles the broadest part of the Earth, and represents 0° latitude. It divides the Earth into two halves, called the northern and the southern hemispheres.

The celestial equator is the circle in which the plane of the Earth's Equator intersects the celestial sphere.
