Edenton

Town and administrative headquarters of Chowan County, northeast North Carolina; population (1990) 5,300. It is situated on Albemarle Sound, near the mouth of the Chowan River, and 45 km/28 mi southwest of Elizabeth City. A tourist destination and the business centre of an agricultural and maritime area, it has some industries, including peanut processing.

Settled before 1660, Edenton flourished shipping plantation products, lumber, and fish. The anti-British Edenton Tea Party of October 1774 is believed to be the first political action organized by American women.
