Edgar (c. 1050–c. 1130)

English prince, born in Hungary. Grandson of Edmund (II) Ironside, king of England in 1016, he was supplanted as heir to Edward the Confessor by William the Conqueror. He led two rebellions against William, in 1068 and 1069, but made peace in 1074.

Opera by Giacomo Puccini (libretto by F Fontana, based on Alfred de Musset's La Coupe et les lèvres), first produced at La Scala, Milan, Italy, on 21 April 1889. In the story, Edgar loves Fidelia but runs away with the Moorish girl Tigrana when she is threatened by villagers. Regretting the loss of Fidelia, he decides to join the soldiers in battle. Later he is reunited with Fidelia, who stabs Tigrana.
