Edgartown

Town and administrative headquarters of Dukes County since 1642, southeast Massachusetts; population (1998 est) 3,700. It is the easternmost town on Martha's Vineyard, situated on Nantucket Sound, and includes Chappaquiddick Island. A summer resort and yachting centre, Edgartown was once a whaling port and had a sperm-oil candle factory.

Many of the old whaling captains' houses still stand, among more Modern and art galleries, shops, inns, and restaurants, and the old whaling church is now a performing arts centre.
