Edgefield County

County in west South Carolina; area 1,269 sq km/490 sq mi; population (1990) 18,400. It is bounded by the Savannah River and the state of Georgia to the southwest. Its administrative headquarters is the town of Edgefield; population (1990) 2,600. Its west quarter is occupied by part of the Sumter National Forest. It is noted for its pottery and as the site of some of the state's earliest textile mills. The rural modern county produces cotton, peaches, asparagus, and timber. Its light industries manufacture lumber, textiles, and food products.

Once part of the larger Edgefield District, this historic area was home to ten South Carolina governors and was the birthplace of Texas Revolutionary hero William B Travis (1809-36), Confederate general James Longstreet (1821-1904), and political leader Benjamin River Tillman (1847-1918).
