Edisto Island

Island in Colleton County, south South Carolina; area c. 260 sq km/100 sq mi; population (1990) 2,800. It is one of the Sea Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean between the North and South Edisto rivers, 40 km/25 mi southwest of Charleston. The hamlet of Edisto Island is approximately in its centre and the town of Edisto Beach is close to its southern tip. Settled in 1690, it was once a centre for the cultivation of Sea Island cotton. Largely developed, it is now primarily a resort.
