Edmondson, William

Edmondson, William (c. 1882–1951)

US sculptor. The son of former slaves, he picked cotton, worked at railroad shops and as a janitor, before he started limestone sculpting. Noted for his modern-primitive art, he specialized in worldly and religious works, such as Mary and Martha (1938).

He was born in Nashville, Tennessee.
