Edwards Air Force Base

US Air Force base in California, situated on Rogers Dry Lake, often used as a landing site by the space shuttle. It is home to the NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center.

Both Edwards and the Cape Canaveral site in Florida have three-mile runways suitable for shuttle landings. However, Edwards has the advantage of being without coastal fog and the dry lake bed provides extra safety in case of brake failure or a shift in the wind. Shuttles landing at Edwards must be transported back to Florida for the next launch.
