Edwardsville

Town and administrative headquarters of Madison County, southwest Illinois; population (1990) 14,600. It is situated close to Dunlap Lake, 27 km/17 mi northeast of East St Louis. Founded in 1805, it is a trade and distribution centre in an area of coal mines and dairy and truck farms. Brass goods and radiators are manufactured here. A branch of Southern Illinois University is located to the west of the town.
