Edwin, James

Edwin, James (1797–1861)

US explorer and naturalist. He was the botanist, geologist, and surgeon for Stephen Long's 1820 exploratory expedition. He compiled several American Indian spelling books. An ardent abolitionist, he ran a station of the Underground Railroad in Iowa.

He was born in Addison County, Vermont. In 1820, he was one of the first white men to climb Pike's Peak. He also translated the New Testament into the Chippewa language (1833).
