Effingham

Town and administrative headquarters of Effingham County, east-central Illinois; population (2000) 12,400. It is located 90 km/56 mi southeast of Decatur. Its manufactures include electrical and gas appliances, lumber, and wood products. Printing is also an important industry, and agricultural and dairy products from the surrounding region are processed and traded here. The Lake Sara recreational area is 8 km/5mi to the northwest.

Westward-bound pioneers travelled on the National Road through the area from the 1830s, but Effingham itself dates from 1854, when the Illinois Central Railroad established a settlement here.
