Egan, William Allen

Egan, William Allen (1914–1984)

US governor. He served in the territorial house of representatives as a Democrat, sponsoring Alaskan statehood. President of the constitutional convention, he drafted the state charter and lobbied for its congressional approval. In 1959, he became Alaska's first governor.

He was born in Valdez, Alaska and owned the Valdez general store. As governor, he worked to harness Alaska's vast natural resources.
