Eger

German name for Cheb, a town in the Czech Republic.

Eger

Capital of Heves county, northern Hungary, in the Eger valley near the Mátra Mountains, 105 km/66 mi northeast of Budapest; population (2001) 58,300. Bull's Blood wine is produced here. The town is an agricultural trading centre, and a tourist base for mountain activities.

Eger was one of the first settlements of the Magyars (Hungarian ethnic group), and was one of the main centres of Hungarian Renaissance culture in the 15th century. Despite fierce resistance to the Turks 1552, the town was the capital of a province of the Ottoman Empire 1596–1687.

It is the seat of a Roman Catholic archbishop.
