Egk, Werner

Egk, Werner (1901–1983)

German composer. He wrote music for the opening of the Berlin Olympics in 1936.

He was mainly self-taught and began to compose to broadcasting commissions. He settled near Munich and succeeded Paul Graener as head of the faculty of composition in the Nazi Reichsmusikkammer. From 1936 to 1940 he conducted at the Berlin Staatsoper and from 1950 to 1953 was director of the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin.

Columbus (1932; produced 1942), Die Zaubergeige (1935), Peer Gynt (1938), Circe (1945), Irische Legende (after Yeats; 1953), Der Revisor (after Gogol; 1957), Die Verlobung in San Domingo (1963).

Joan von Zarissa (1940), Abraxas (1948).

Orchestral
