Ehrling, Sixten (1918-2005)

Swedish conductor. He made his debut at the Stockholm Opera in 1940 and was musical director there 1953-70; he conducted the first performance of Blomdahl's Aniara there in 1959, and soon after took it, with the Stockholm Company, to Edinburgh and London (the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden). He was musical director at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra 1963-73, and taught at the Juilliard School. He conducted Simon Boccanegra and a Ring cycle at the New York Metropolitan Opera House 1973-77, and was principal guest conductor at the Denver Symphony Orchestra 1978-85. He was artistic adviser for the San Antonio Symphony Orchestra 1985-88.
