Eichelberger, Robert L(awrence) (1886–1961)

US general, who was a commander of US forces in the Pacific, 1942–45.

He was commandant of West Point Military Academy when the USA entered the war, and was sent to take command of US I Corps in the Pacific. He fought in New Guinea, defeating the Japanese at Buna in January 1943, and then took command of the US 8th Army for the assault on the Philippines 1945.
