Einstein Observatory

US astronomical satellite launched in 1978. It operated until 1981, returning the first high-resolution images of X-ray sources. Originally known as HEAO-2, it was renamed in honour of physicist Albert Einstein to mark the centenary of his birth in 1879.

X-ray mission since the Einstein Observatory in 1979, will study variations as small as one-millionth of a second in the X-ray output of such compact objects as black holes, neutron stars, and white dwarfs in the Milky Way.
The successful launch of the Einstein Observatory -- the world's largest X-ray telescope -- with funding from NASA (1978).
