Einstein on the Beach

Opera by Philip Glass (text by Robert Wilson), first produced in Avignon, France, on 25 July 1976 and then at the New York Metropolitan Opera House on 21 November 1976 (at the Lincoln Center but not with the Metropolitan Opera Company). The text includes poems by a mentally impaired man; references are made to Patty Hearst and pop idols David Cassidy and the Beatles. The audience is invited to come and go at will during the 4 1/2 hours of performance.

she first appeared in Douglas Dunn's Celesta, and was influenced by minimalism and the loft and downtown scenes as well as the landmark Einstein on the Beach by Robert Wilson and Philip Glass.
As a synthesis of dance, music, stage sets, and poetry, it has been rivaled only by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson's Einstein on the Beach.
