Eiseley, Loren Corey (1907–1977)

US cultural anthropologist and writer. After gaining his PhD, he went into academia, becoming the curator of early man at the University of Pennsylvania's museum. His books include The Immense Journey (1957) and the autobiography, All the Strange Hours, (1975).

He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska, graduated from the University of Nebraska, and took his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. He taught anthropology at the University of Kansas and Oberlin, before returning to the University of Pennsylvania, where he also served as university provost. In the 1930s, he did field work in the American West to investigate the remains of the earliest humans to inhabit North America. His other publications include Darwin's Century (1958), The Unexpected Universe (1969), and Night Country (1971). He moved increasingly from straightforward explanations of matters such as evolution to more literary and personal ruminations.
