Eisenerz

Town in the Austrian province of Styria, 26 km/16 mi northwest of Donawitz-Leoben; population (1991) 7,600. It is a mining town at the foot of the Erzberg (height 1,533 m/5,029 ft), with the largest opencast iron-ore mine in continental Europe. Mineral extraction has taken place here since the Iron Age.
