Elâzig

Elâziǧ

Capital of Elâziǧ province in eastern Turkey, 608 km/380 mi southeast of Ankara; population (2000) 266,500. Situated at an altitude of 1,020 m/3,346 ft, near the head of the Euphrates valley, it lies above the Keban Reservoir, in a fertile basin of the mountainous plateau of central Anatolia. An agricultural market centre, its industries include winemaking, sugar-refining, engineering, and the manufacture of textiles.

Features

The Keban Dam and hydroelectric station on the Euphrates, completed in 1974, lie 50 km/31 mi to the northwest. It forms part of the Great Anatolia Project (GAP) which aims to create a ring of 22 dams around the Euphrates–Tigris basin, the largest being the Atatürk Dam. The scheme has caused tension with Iraq and Syria due to the reduction of water crossing the borders.

History

Elâziǧ was founded in 1862 by Sultan Abdülaziz as an overspill for ancient Harput, now sparsely populated due to earthquake activity.
