El Jedida

Seaport town and popular tourist resort in Morocco, 175 km/109 mi north of Marrakesh for which it is the port; population (1993) 125,000. Chief exports are grain, almonds, hides, and wool.

The town was founded by the Portuguese in 1513. They were forced to evacuate the fortress in 1769, following a siege by Sultan Sidi Muhammad ben Abdallah. The walls were rebuilt in 1820 by Sultan Moulay Abd ar-Rahman.
