El Monte

Town in Los Angeles County, southwest California; population (1990) 106,200. It is located 23 km/14 mi east of Los Angeles, on the San Gabriel River. It was settled in 1852 at the terminus of the Santa Fe Trail, and was for several decades a truck and dairy farming and fruit and walnut growing centre. El Monte's annexation of nearby communities in 1961 tripled its population. It is now a residential suburb with manufactures including electronic and aircraft components and mobile homes.
