El Morro

Sandstone formation in west-central New Mexico. It rises 61 m/200 ft above the surrounding valley, and is located 48 km/30 mi west-southwest of the city of Grants. Hundreds of inscriptions on its soft yellow walls include ancient petroglyphs as well as carvings by Spaniards and early westbound pioneers. Protected as El Morro National Monument in 1906, the area includes ruins of ancient pueblos.
