El Oro

Province in southwest Ecuador, with a coastline on the Pacific Ocean; area 5,944 sq km/2,295 sq mi; population (1996) 512,587. The provincial capital is at Machala. Bananas and cacao are the main agricultural products from this region, and, until the 1940s, a significant amount of gold was mined around Zaruma. It is also an important pond-shrimp producing area.

An annual banana fair is held in El Oro in September.
