El Reno

Town and administrative headquarters of Canadian County, central Oklahoma; population (2000) 16,200. It is situated near the North Canadian River, 40 km/25 mi west of Oklahoma City. It grew with the Rock Island Railroad's arrival in 1889, and today is a processing and shipping centre for wheat, cotton, oats, alfalfa, dairy goods, and livestock. There are railway workshops, flour mills, and other industries. Nearby are the remains of the cavalry outpost Fort Reno (1874), and a Federal prison.
