El Segundo

Town in Los Angeles County, southwest California; population (1990) 15,200. It is located 16 km/10 mi southwest of Los Angeles city centre, on Santa Monica Bay. It was founded by the Standard Oil Company in 1911 as the site for an oil refinery, the second (el segundo) in south California; the beachside area was accessible to tankers. Today, El Segundo remains an important refining centre. It has electronics and computer industries and corporate headquarters. It has also been, since the height of the Cold War, an aerospace centre, manufacturing aircraft and space vehicles. An Air Force missile station is here, and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is to the north.
