Elbļg

River port in Gdańsk province, Poland, on the River Elbļg near the southwestern end of the Vistula lagoon, 50 km/31 mi southeast of Gdańsk; population (2002) 128,100. Industries include shipbuilding, engineering, and electrical products.

Founded in the 13th century by settlers from Bremen and Lübeck, Elbļg became a member of the medieval Hanseatic League merchant confederation, trading with England. It belonged to Poland 1466–1772 and to German East Prussia until 1945.
