Elbrus

Highest peak in Europe; located in the Caucasus Mountains, Caucasia, in the Russian Federation. Its western summit reaches a height of 5,642 m/18,510 ft, while the eastern summit stands at 5,595 m/18,356 ft.

Elbrus is an extinct volcano, whose glaciers cover 138.5 sq km/53.5 sq mi. The source of the Kuban River is here. The area around Elbrus has become a popular centre for skiing and climbing.

The western summit was first climbed by a Russian expedition in 1829. A British expedition conquered the lower eastern summit in 1868.
