The gradient of a curve keeps changing, so in order to calculate the gradient you have to draw a straight line that touches a point on the curve (the tangent). The gradient for that point on the curve will then be the same as the gradient of the straight line.

On a graph, the slope of a straight or curved line. The slope of a curve at any given point is represented by the slope of the tangent at that point.
