Elephanta

Island in Mumbai harbour, Maharashtra state, India, some 8 km/5 mi from Mumbai (formerly Bombay). The 6th-century Temple Caves, cut out of solid rock, have sculptures of many Hindu deities carved 450–740. Formerly known as Gharapuri, the island was renamed by Portuguese in 1535, after a large stone elephant near the island's landing place. The statue is now in Mumbai.
