Eleusis

Town in Greece, on the Saronic Gulf, 22 km/14 mi northwest of Athens. Industries include shipbuilding and the production of iron, steel, and petrochemicals. Ancient Eleusis was the site of the sanctuary of Demeter, the corn goddess, and the festival of the Eleusinian Mysteries, in honour of Demeter and her daughter Persephone, was held here.

The site of ancient Eleusis was badly damaged during World War II, and little remains of the sanctuary.
