Elgin

City in Cook and Kane counties, northeastern Illinois, 58 km/36 mi northwest of Chicago, on the Fox River; population (2000) 94,500. Local manufactures include machine tools, hobby supplies, caskets, street sweepers, electrical products, precision instruments, and belting. Elgin is also a centre for the printing of religious publications. Elgin was founded in 1835 and incorporated as a city in 1854. It was the the home of the Elgin Watch Company from 1864–1970. Condensed milk was invented here in 1856. The city is home to Judson College (1963).
