Elgon, Mount

An extinct volcano with a huge caldera (crater), on the borders of Kenya and Uganda, 96 km/60 mi northeast of Lake Victoria; height 4,321 m/14,178 ft. The lower slopes are intensively cultivated except on the dry northern side. The Mount Elgon National Park was created in 1968; area 16,923 ha/41,785 acres.
